The Stampede has announced some bold new plans for expansion.

After years of land purchases and consolidation in Victoria Park, Calgarians are finally going to see some new development.

Olympic Way is going to be turned into Stampede Trail.

It will feature 400,000 square feet of mixed-use projects that will include ground level shopping and restaurants and second and third floor office space.

The Stampede Trail development will be built by a group known as Alberta Development Partners Inc, which is actually based in Colorado.

The developer says it will be a world-class gathering place for the community, designed for all seasons, with a western design.

Companies like Sunterra Market have already committed to the development.

One of the main tenants will be Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, a successful chain with locations all over the world based on the laid-back lifestyle and travels of musician Jimmy Buffett.

The restaurant will feature a 930 square metre (10,000 square foot) patio and of course the menu will feature the famous "Cheeseburger in Paradise."

This will be the first Canadian location of Margaritaville. The first Margaritaville restaurant opened in Key West in 1985. There are now locations in Las Vegas, New Orleans, Cancun and the Caribbean.

The new Stampede Trail development will cost 170 million dollars and will include six buildings spread over three blocks from 12th Avenue to the Stampede gates.

The Stampede says Margaritaville will open in time for 100 year anniversary of the Calgary Stampede in 2012.
