A Calgary police officer has turned himself in after a dog was kicked to death during an incident in southeast Calgary.

One of the officer's neighbours in Lake Bonavista says he kicked her dog to death Sunday night after it ran towards his dog.

Three and a half year old Harley died Sunday night outside his Lake Bonavista home.

Melanie says Harley was off leash for a moment when he ran across the street to another dog.

Dunne says that's when the owner of the other dog kicked Harley and walked away.

Harley died moments later lying in the street.

The dog owners put up posters in the neighborhood asking for information about the identity of the man.

Tuesday an officer came forward saying he was involved in the incident, while defending his own pet.

Melanie Dunne says, "I don't think anyone is supposed to uphold the law more than anyone else. This guy is a horrible, horrible person. Even if Harley was attacking his dog, which he clearly wasn't, there's no excuse to kill him."

Police say the officer says he took action to protect his dog, who was being attacked by the other dog. They say he is co-operating fully with this investigation.

The Calgary Police Service is investigating this incident with assistance from the Calgary Humane Society and Calgary Animal and Bylaw

Services, and the Crown Prosecutor's Office.
