A Calgary police officer has been charged with a disturbing crime, the province announced Friday.

Randann Sargent is accused of luring a child in connection with an investigation run by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team and assisted by the Alberta Integrated Child Exploitation Unit.

Four computers were also seized from a Calgary home in the community of Cranston and are being examined by police experts.

The 26-year-old is charged with one count of using a computer system to communicate with a person he believed to be under the age of 18 years, for the purpose of facilitating the commission of an offense.

Sargent has been with the service for two-and-a-half years.

The Calgary Police Service says he is a patrol officer assigned to District 5 and has been suspended with pay.

Officers with CPS investigated an initial complaint in October 2008 before passing it on to the province.

The charge stems from an incident between May 19 and June 10, 2009.

He was arrested on June 11 and released on bail.

Sargent will be back in court July 2.
