Police say they found a number of weapons in the home belonging to the man shot to death by police.

Inside the house they discovered 13 long guns including a loaded rifle. The also found several flares and various types of ammunition.

CTV News has also learned that Melvin Donald VanHouwe was court ordered not to own any guns.

Early Sunday morning, 49-year-old VanHouwe was killed after a hostage taking.

Police say VanHouwe was holding a 19-year-old at gunpoint in a house in the 500 block of Sabrina Road S.W.

Officers say VanHouwe was ordered to drop his sawed-off shotgun but instead pointed the weapon at police.

That's when the fatal shot was fired by a member of the Tactical Unit.

CTV News has learned VanHouwe was convicted of drug trafficking in 2003. He was also forbidden to own any guns for 10 years.

The hostage victim tells CTV News he had known VanHouwe for a long time and he was a very friendly man up until the incident.

The 19-year-old also says he used his cell phone to text message his roommate for help.

It was because of text messaging that police were called to the home and able to get the hostage out safely.

The 19-year-old says he is still very shaken up about the ordeal.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is currently investigating the shooting. It could take up to eight months to complete the investigation.
