A group of Calgary researchers has developed international guidelines for the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in diagnosing myocarditis.

Dr. Mathias Freiderich uses an MRI machine to diagnose acute myocarditis which is an inflammation of the heart.

Throughout the past five years, Freiderich and his team have developed the exact parameters that are punched into the machine to give them the most accurate picture of how the heart is functioning.

The guidelines, which were developed right here in Calgary, have been adopted as the standard for diagnosing myocarditis around the world.

"The protocol that we've been developing here has by research proven to be the most accurate," said Dr. Freiderich. "That's why it was easy to come to a consensus, which is now the protocol for the entire international community."
