Transsexuals in Calgary have taken their fight to the Human Rights Commission.

"Today I was meant to be able to book my surgery," says Heather Edwards, a transsexual. "To have the funding pulled just before booking the surgery was pretty devastating."

Last Tuesday, the province announced it would no longer be funding gender reassignment surgery.

On Wednesday, Calgary's transsexual community gathered together to send a united message to the province.

They say the surgery is not cosmetic but is a human right so the group lodged complaints against the province. They are claiming gender discrimination, mental health discrimination and physical disability discrimination.

Jordenne Prescott was part of the group that filed complaints in Calgary on Wednesday. "It's a weight lifted off my shoulder. I now know I'm doing everything I can to protect my right and it's nice to feel something is happening."

Transsexuals in Edmonton have also filed complaints with the Human Rights Commission.
