A Calgary Police officer, who was conducting traffic enforcement on eastbound 16th Avenue near Deerfoot Trail, was dragged approximately 200 metres by a vehicle around 9:45 a.m. Friday.

Constable Sean LaBrie, a veteran officer with over 10 years of service, pulled a car over for speeding but became suspicious.

He decided to arrest the male driver and asked him to get out of the vehicle.

The driver resisted arrest and wouldn't get out of the car.

Cst. LaBrie leaned into the vehicle to try and pull him out.

A struggle then ensued; the driver then put the car in gear, hit the gas and started to drive away with Cst. LaBrie trapped between the door and the body of the car.

As the car sped away it sideswiped another vehicle causing minor damage.

Cst. LaBrie managed to pull himself into the car and, while wrestling with the driver, managed to hit the brakes and put the car in park.

By that time, police back-up had arrived and, with the assistance of another officer, the driver and a female passenger were arrested without injury.

Cst. LaBrie was taken to Peter Lougheed Centre with minor injuries.

He was treated for strains and bruising, including a torn rotator cuff.

Traffic was backed up in the area for about two hours as police investigated at the scene.

The driver of the car, 25-year-old Andrio Martin of no fixed address, is charged with dangerous driving causing injury, assault to resist arrest, escape custody, obstruction, resist arrest and several Traffic Safety Act offences.

He's set to appear in court April 14.
