Provincial opposition parties are furious about a pay raise Alberta Health's superboard gave themselves.

At a meeting in Red Deer on Wednesday, the board agreed to boost their honoraria to $50,000. They will also receive an additional $750 for every board meeting they attend -which is four per month.

"Albertans learned today that Alberta Health Services Board executives are receiving raises of up to 25 percent, at a time when communities are losing obstetrics services and hospitals can't create new beds," says David Swann, the leader of the Liberals.

"This government is doling out bonuses to every fat cat with their hand out, meanwhile 30,000 Albertans who have lost their jobs have been told to tighten their belts," says Brian Mason, the leader of the NDP.

Swann also questions the timing of the raises because Alberta Health is facing a $1.3-billion deficit.
