It may officially be spring, but it definitely feels more like winter today. Calgarians woke up to massive amounts of snow Sunday morning. Around 15-30 centimetres fell, depending on where you live.
Before the snow started falling Saturday night, designated roadways were treated with an anti-icing solution to prevent ice and snow accumulation. The city upped its staffing levels and 52 sanders and 21 graders were out clearing priority one and two routes. These are roads that have more than 20 thousand vehicles per day as well as designated emergency routes and other trouble spots.
Lori Boychuk with Calgary's Roads Department says they were prepared for this spring storm.
"Well thankfully mother nature has given us a break and chosen a weekend to fire us this snowfall but we are prepared seven days a week, 24 hours a day to deal with a snow fall, and it's much easier for commuters for sure that this happened over the weekend and we're hoping that by tomorrow morning there will be a smooth commute for everyone."
Traveling anywhere was difficult whether it was by foot, car or aircraft. Some city busses had a difficult time navigating hills that didn't have any sanding done. The Airport Authority says while airlines canceled some flights, the airport was fully operational with some minor delays due to de-icing aircraft.
Calgary Police responded to 125 crashes, but none were serious.
