One man is dead after being shot by police inside a car wash in southwest Calgary.

It happened at around 3:15 Wednesday morning at a car wash on Richmond Road in the southwest community of Glamorgan.

Police were following a stolen vehicle with two people inside when the driver pulled into the car wash.

When police tried to make an arrest, there was a confrontation and one officer shot one of the people in the car.

It is not clear whether the driver or the passenger is the shooting victim.

The shooting victim was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition. He has now died from his injuries.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The Calgary Police Association says the suspect tried to ram officers on foot with his vehicle and police had no choice but to stop the man by all means necessary.

"A person in that frame of mind, if he is able to escape, even if officers don't pursue him, and he comes out to a residential street and rams into a vehicle carrying a family of children or any other individual, you know he is not going to stop," says John Dooks, CPA President.

Dooks says the officer who fired his weapon is a veteran firearms instructor who has been with the service for roughly 20 years.

Investigators say the stolen vehicle was being followed by the High Enforcement Auto Theft Team.

The road surrounding the car wash is taped off for the investigation.

Crime Scene investigators are going over the scene, taking photographs and other evidence.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is also investigating the shooting. The provincial team investigates whenever an officer is involved in a shooting.

Neighbours say they woke up to hear gunshots and saw at least one police officer running through the car wash bay.

They were shocked to learn about the shooting, saying other than loud music at the car wash, it is a quiet neighbourhood with few crime problems.
