Despite a struggling economy, the province says the minimum wage is going up.

"We want to ensure that Albertans earning the minimum wage are as protected as possible during these changing times," says Hector Goudreau, the minister of employment and immigration.

As of April 1st, the minimum hourly wage for Alberta workers will be $8.80; it currently stands at $8.40.

The province says the hike will impact about 20,000 workers.

When the change comes in, Alberta will have the second highest minimum wage rate in the country.

The average hourly wage in Alberta is $23.90.
