Shocking details about charges laid against a 56-year-old man in connection with the abduction of a Penhold girl.

Gerard John Baumgarte is charged with impersonating a peace officer, kidnapping with a firearm, sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault, and uttering a threat.

Police say the crime was planned and the girl was taken by a man who was dressed in clothing that gave the impression he was a police officer. He also had a flashing light on his vehicle.

On Thursday, a 16-year-old girl disappeared after going to a convenience store in Penhold.

On Saturday evening, 46 hours after she went missing, the girl showed up at a toy store in the Red Deer mall asking to use the telephone.

Based on her description, police were able to make a quick arrest in the case. Investigators say the girl did not know her abductor but they aren't releasing details about how she escaped.

Anyone who is any doubt as to the authenticity of a peace officer is advised to call 9-1-1 and ask for someone to verify the officer's identity.

A real officer will give you his identification number and give you the time to check it out.
