A cold virus known as RSV showed up early this year and is affecting Calgary's babies.

RSV can make babies quite sick and already the virus is having a huge impact on the Alberta Children's Hospital.

Five week old Kaleb Thannhauser was admitted to the ICU at the hospital when he started getting really sick.

"We came because he was really sleepy, he hadn't been feeding well for long enough that I was really worried about him," said Kaleb's mom Kristine.

RSV starts out like a regular cold but can progress quickly to make a baby extremely sick and sometimes it's tough for parents to determine when to get help.

Doctors say they are seeing several kids with the virus every day and that if a baby isn't eating, that's a big warning sign.

"Feeding is really important when it comes to the well being of a baby," said Respiratory Specialist Dr. Ian Mitchell.

Nearly 6000 babies are hospitalized every year with RSV infections and the virus is most commonly spread by our hands.
