Calgary police confirm that a shooting at a restaurant on New Year's Day, that left 3 people dead, was gang related.

The shooting happened on New Year's Day around 4:00 in the afternoon at the Bolsa Vietnamese restaurant on 94th Ave. S.E.

Two of the victims were found dead in the restaurant and the third was located outside in the parking lot.

Investigators say they have tentatively identified the victims and say that one is a well known gang member.

Two of the men were eating in the restaurant with a woman and the third man was returning to the table when the bullets started flying.

He collapsed just steps from the front door and died.

The woman was not hurt in the attack.

One of the victims in the restaurant was wearing body armour and police say that it is a sign that gang members know they are living a dangerous life.

"We've always said that there are only three ways out of a gang and more and more we're finding that these gang members are ending up in cemeteries," said Acting S/SGT. Gord Eiriksson from the Organized Crime Operations Centre.

The Calgary Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy on one of the victims Friday and do the other two next week.
