A satellite tracking device was used to help in the rescue of 11 people trapped in Sunday's avalanche near Fernie.

The distress signal went to a call centre in Texas and officials there contacted police in B-C.

Backcountry enthusiasts say the units don't replace other safety equipment but do provide an extra layer of protection.

"It gives a GPS location and eases the dispatch time for helicopter to come to your assistance but it is important to remember it is a one-way call system," says Lori Zacaruk, an avalanche safety expert.

Zacaruk says nothing can replace proper safety training.
