The man accused of shooting an innocent Brazilian student in the face was in court Monday charged with attempted murder.

30-year-old Roland Warawa appeared briefly before the judge by closed-circuit television.

The case will be put over until October 20th, when Warawa will enter a plea and the judge will deal with the issue of bail.

Warawa will remain behind bars until then.

The victim, 24-year-old Jose Ribeiro Neto, left the Rockyview Hospital Monday afternoon surrounded by his girlfriend and parents.

Neto's head was wrapped in bandages as his family and a nurse helped him into a taxi.

Doctors were unable to save his eyesight and last Friday they had to remove both of his eyes.

The Brazilian Community Association says they are flooded with calls from Calgarians who want to help and they are trying to find Jose and his family a place to stay.

The CNIB is on board to help them adjust and a trust fund is being set up to accept donations to assist the family with medical costs and expenses.
