Lake Minnewanka is known for its beautiful scenery but right now one of the big attractions is an environmentally friendly bathroom.

The new facility is made of concrete. It also has a life span of 100 years.

Solar panels on the roof provide electricity and heat the water system.

A septic field disperses the effluent rather than it being pumped and trucked out up to three times a day during the busy summer months.

The new biffy comes with a hefty price tag. The final cost is $1.8 million.

Mark Merchant with Parks Canada says the facility is paid for entirely by park user fees.

The new bathroom is open from May until Thanksgiving.

In winter, people will have to use the old-style outhouses.

The seasonal washroom facility is a pilot project for Parks Canada. If it is successful at Lake Minnewanka you will see more of the facilities throughout Banff National Park.
