The North American Solar Challenge is over and the University of Michigan is the winner for the 3rd consecutive year

Fifteen solar powered cars crossed the finish line at the University of Calgary Tuesday afternoon to crowds of fans and supporters.

The cars left July 13 from Plano, Texas and have covered nearly 4000 Km to get here.

Some teams have zipped along while others have had to adapt and perform quick fixes to keep their cars on the road.

Teams left the Family Leisure Centre in Medicine Hat at 9:00 Tuesday morning to complete the final leg of the journey.

Many of the cars were affected by cloud cover but most pushed their machines to the limit to complete the race as fast as they could.

The University of Michigan was first across the line at 1:19 P.M. to win the coveted race and bragging rights until next year.

The top 7 teams crossed the finish line as follows:

1. University of Michigan's Continuum 1:19

2. University of Waterloo 1:47

3. Germany's FH Bochum 2:06

4. University of Minnesota 2:15

5. Principia College 2:20

6. Queen's University 2:28

7. University of Calgary 2:33

U of C team members jogged along side their car, "Schulich One", across the finish line and were greeted by nearly 10,000 cheering supporters.

The U of C team will take a much needed break now before starting preparations for next year.

Three Canadian teams finished in the top ten and the University of Calgary officially finished 6th this year.

Officials are still calculating final times and will post the final results for all 15 teams on their website.
