A spike in ATV fatalities has prompted the Alberta government to review safety regulations for riders.

According to the University of Alberta, fatal accidents on ATV's rose by 83 percent between 2005 and 2006.

Currently, children under 14 are not allowed to operate the machines on public land and there is no mandatory helmet or training laws in Alberta.

In May of this year, a two-year-old boy died near Taber after an ATV crash. He was riding on a quad with four other people when they hit a rock and the boy was thrown from the vehicle. No one was wearing a helmet.

A group called "Quad Squad" is promoting responsible use of Alberta's southern Rockies as well as wilderness preservation.  The group also offers safety and training for riders from certified instructors.

Premier Stelmach waded in on the issue and says that the government is now reviewing safety regulations for the machines.

"It's of concern to this government, there is a review process, the minister is awaiting a report in terms of helmet use," said Premier Ed Stelmach, "I think it's just common sense."

The report is due out in the fall.
